GREAT Britain's Peter Norfolk faces a battle to secure a third US Open wheelchair tennis title.

The defending champion and two-time Paralympic gold medallist lost the opening set of his final encounter with David Wagner 6-0 before rain intervened at Flushing Meadows.

Norfolk lost his world number one ranking to Wagner in July after taking five months out of competition but after the recent birth of his second child, he arrived in New York raring to recapture the top spot.

And he was also smarting for revenge following a 7-5, 7-6 defeat, alongside with partner Johan Andersson, to Wagner and Nicholas Taylor in the doubles final.

Norfolk last lost a set to Wagner without winning a game in the second set of their third and last round-robin match at January's Australian Open.

But he came back to win that contest en route to retaining his Australian Open title and he will hope for a similar turn around in fortunes on Monday.

Meanwhile, Holland's Esther Vergeer continued her incredible 396-match winning streak by trouncing Australia's Daniela Di Toro 6-0, 6-0 to claim her sixth women's title. The 29-year old has not been beaten since 2003.

Elsewhere, Great Britain's Gordon Reid, Lucy Shuker and Jamie Burdekin won the men's singles, women's singles and quad singles titles respectively at the Tennis Canada International in Montreal.
