McCartney has been appointed by sportswear giant Adidas, the official sportswear partner of the Games and the British Olympic Association.

She will be the creative inspiration behind the team kit and podium outfits, while high street chain Next will design formal wear for the closing and opening ceremonies.

"I'm a massive fan of Stella McCartney and with London hosting the Olympic Games it is really important as the host nation to set the standards," said Olympic sprint cycling champion Victoria Pendleton.

"To have a British designer inputting into the British kit is going to be very special."

McCartney, the daughter of Beatles legend Sir Paul, is regarded one of the world's leading designers and London 2012 won't be her first sporting brief.

At this year's Wimbledon, Danish player Caroline Wozniacki wore an Adidas kit designed by McCartney and emblazoned with her name.

"As a British fashion designer it is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she said.
