Brownlee went into the race in second place in the overall rankings after winning the three races - Madrid, Washington DC and Kitzbuhel - he had entered.

The 21-year-old is chasing a unique treble, having previously been crowned junior world champion in 2006 and U23 world champion in 2008.

The win never looked in doubt after world championship rival Javier Gomez crashed out on the bike.

And Brownlee now leads the series by 707 points having produced a dominant performance, easing across the line eight seconds ahead of Steffen Justus in 1:41.50 hours.

"I can't believe it - it was tough but it's great to win at home," said Brownlee.

"The crowd was unbelievable - one of the best I've ever raced in front of.

"I couldn't have expected this at the beginning of the season - not even after Kitzbuhel.

"But I've had a fair bit of luck in every race, including Javier crashing today.

"It's not great to win a race when the person you want to beat crashes out."

Brownlee was dominant throughout and left the Serpentine in fourth place, sandwiched between his younger brother Jonathan Brownlee in fifth and Gomez in third.

But once Gomez was out of the equation, Brownlee senior was effortless in easing away from the field in the run.

Meanwhile, fellow Brit Tim Don rolled back the years to finish ninth and the former world champion was full of praise for Brownlee.

"That's my first proper race of the year without anything going wrong so to get a top ten finish is great," said Don.

"It was a really exciting race and a very fast course - I really enjoyed it, I'm over the moon.

"Alistair did it again - what a legend. He just wound it up and wound it up so fair play to the lad."

Elsewhere, Will Clarke finished 15th, Jonathan Brownlee finished 27th, Aaron Harris and Stuart Hayes crossed the line 42nd and 43rd respectively, while David McNamee did not finish.

The Series now heads to Yokohama, Japan before culminating with a finale in the Gold Coast, Australia.
