Teenager Robson will now reset her sights on the junior event, where she was a beaten finalist 12 months ago, while Cavaday will return home after a chastening lesson by one of the world's top players.

Robson - who took Daniela Hantuchova to three sets in her senior Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon last year and just missed out on qualifying for the US Open - made Holland's Michaella Krajicek, a former world number 30 who reached the third round in Melbourne four years ago, work for her progess.

“It was very tough. Laura is a very talented girl, as everyone knows. It was a great match and I played very well.  I was very happy with my performance," said Krajicek.

“Laura played better in the second set and it could have gone either way.  It was up and down, so I was very happy to pull it out in two sets.”

The news was less encouraging for Cavaday, who was bullied off court in just 52 minutes by Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer.

It was a tough draw for the British number five, with the world number 16 only playing in qualifying due to a complication that stemed from her suspension - which was subsequently overturned on appeal - for falling foul of the controversial anti-doping whereabouts rule.

Cavaday insisted she has nothing to lose in the match and so it proved, as Wickmayer raced to the first set in just 21 minutes before wrapping up a 6-0, 6-1 victory in double-quick time.

“I was really nervous yesterday because it was my first game, but today I was a lot more relaxed and I played well,” said Wickmayer.
