WORLD triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee has no intentions of taking his foot off the pedal in 2010 and has already set his sights on capturing the European Championship crown next season.

The 21-year-old produced a remarkable set of results last season that saw him clinch victories in Madrid, Kitzbuehel, London, Sydney and Washington DC in the inaugural World Championship Series before rubber stamping his dominance with first place at the season-finale in the Gold Coast.

Brownlee has been recognised for his superb form with British Triathlon's 2009 Olympic Athlete of the Year award and has also been named British Triathlon Male Athlete of the Year - but having been forced to settle for silver at last season's European Championships, the Brit is determined to put that right in 2010.

"It's fantastic; it's great to win all these awards," said Brownlee. "[I want to] win the European Championships. It's one thing I didn't manage to win this year.

"That would be great [and I would like to] carry on getting experience and build up, on the road to 2012."

Helen Jenkins won the British Triathlon Female Athlete of the Year award for the second year in succession. This followed four, top-five finishes in the World Championship Series, including a bronze medal in the Grand Final.

She said: "It's great. It's the second year I have won it, so I didn't really expect it again.  It's nice to be recognised by the people who are in the British Triathlon Federation.

"It's been a great year for triathlon [with] so many World Champions and gold medals over all disciplines - it's a privilege to be a part of that.

"We all just go out there and train as hard as we can every day, and this is the good bit that's comes after all that training.

"There is a good atmosphere in British triathlon at the moment in general and hopefully that will carry on."

Meanwhile, Beijing Olympian Hollie Avil, 19, also enjoyed a year to remember, capturing gold at the Under-23 World Championships. She was also named Junior Female Athlete of the Year.

"It was a big shock, but I forget I am still a junior at 19 and it's nice to be reminded of that when you are racing up there with the seniors," said Avil.

"I have just enjoyed racing at the Senior level and U23, getting more experience in the bag, and I really can't wait for the next three years up to London."

The Olympic Athlete of the Year award is handed out by the British Olympic Association to each of the 35 national associations in Olympic sport, who in turn select their elite competitor of the year.

And BOA chief executive Andy Hunt believes Brownlee and co are taking big strides towards success at London 2012.

"Alistair Brownlee has had an incredible season, winning five ITU World Championship Series races and ultimately the World Championship title," he said.

"His attitude and commitment to the sport is inspiring. With no fewer than four medals, including two World Champions from the ITU Triathlon World Championships in Australia, the future of triathlon looks bright in the run up to London 2012 Olympic Games."

Younger brother Jonathan Brownlee, the current European junior champion, was named Junior Athlete of the Year.
