The British number one raced to the first set but then had to work to close out the match 6-2, 7-6.
But the victory - over a player ranked 11 places above her - will give the world number 56 confidence ahead of her clash with Craybas, ranked just inside the world's top 100.
And Craybas needed all her reserves to come from behind to beat Edina Gallovits 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Meanwhile, British number three Joshua Goodall has crashed out in the first round of qualifying for this weekend's French Open at Roland Garros.
Goodhall was brushed aside in just over an hour as Bosnian-born American Amer Delic completed a regulation 6-4, 6-4 win.
Four other British players will also seek a place in the main draw, when the season's second Grand Slam gets under way on Sunday.
British number two Alex Bogdanovic will face American Ryler Dehart later today while Katie O'Brien, Elena Baltacha and Georgie Stoop are in action on Wednesday.
World number three Andy Murray will find out his seeding later this week while Keothavong and Mel South are entered into the main draw - the first time two British woman have automatically qualified since Jo Durie, Sara Gomer and Monique Javer in 1992.
