Swimming's world governing body, FINA, announced the plan following a meeting of its executive committee in Bangkok.
The championships were blighted by the controversy surrounding new-age swim suit, which has since been banned, but none of the 391 initial tests came back positive.
Fina will recheck samples for the presences of ‘plasticisers' - miniscule particles of plastic left over from blood bags.
They will also look into storing samples for up to eight years to screen them for further doping infractions, should improved testing procedures become available.
The International Olympic Committee have already announced a similar measure for competitors at next month's Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Fina are also considering following cycling's lead and introducing biological passport, to monitor competitor's blood profiles.
