The British number one eased his way past South Africa's Kevin Anderson in his opening match in Melbourne Park under the Rod Laver Arena roof as the rain came down southern Australia city.
His clash with world number 57 is scheduled for 7:00pm local time however on the Margaret Court Arena, ensuring the Scot will get his first taste of the hot and humid conditions.
And Murray is expecting no walk in the Melbourne Park.
"I've played against Gicquel once before," said the 22-year-old Brit. "I played him in Rotterdam last year. "It was pretty close - it went to three sets.
"I think he might have stopped at 3-0 in the third with an injury but he's a tough player, he's got a lot of experience and he's pretty quick around the court.
Murray is not the only Brit in action in Melbourne on Wednesday. World number 83, Elena Baltacha is squaring off against Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine, who is seeded 30th.
After her impressive victory over Austria's Patricia Mayr, Katie O'Brien will meet eighth seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia while Louk Sorensen, who became Ireland's first ever player to win a grand slam match.
In doubles action will be British duo Ken Skupski and Colin Fleming when they face Yen-Hsun Lu and Janko Tipsarevic while Ross Hutchins his Australian partner Jordan Kerr are up against Poland's seventh seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.
