Liu touched home in two minutes 1.81 seconds according to news agency Xinhua, eclipsing the previous record of 2:03.41 set by Australia's Jessicah Schipper at the World Championships in July in Rome.

The 20-year-old had previously set the world record at the Beijing Olympics when she romped to gold in the Water Cube.

And she re-wrote her name into the record books in Jinan, finishing almost four seconds clear of rival Jiao Liuyang, who took silver in Beijing last year.

"I don't think the result today is fast enough for me, and there is still room for me to better the record in the future," said Liu, after breaking the first swimming world record of the Oct 16-28 National Games.

"Every tiny progress could make a new world record, which is very common in the pool.

"I trained very hard after I came back from the World Championships. I cooperate very well with my coach, who set higher standard for my training in terms of intensity and capacity."

The image is not taken from the National Games, but last year's Olympics. You can tell it by the color of her swimming cap. She is wearing a white cap at the National Games.
