JAVIER Gomez gained revenge on Britain's Alistair Brownlee by claiming victory in the London leg of triathlon's Dextro Energy World Championship Series.

The Spanish former world champion - also a recent winner in Hamburg - was beaten by Brownlee on his home patch in Madrid last month and reversed that result around the Hyde Park course that will stage the 2012 Olympic triathlon events in just over two years time.

Gomez timed his sprint to perfection while Jonny Brownlee, Alistair's younger brother, claimed second and Olympic champion Jan Frodeno completed the podium.

Reigning world champion Brownlee - who also beat Gomez at the recent European Championships in Ireland - faded in the final 500m to finish a distant tenth, staggering over the line exhausted. He was later rushed away for medical attention after appearing to collapse.

"It's a special place to win and it's an awesome feeling," said Gomez, who clocked one hour 42 minutes and eight seconds.

"I had to beat a great champion in Alistair but I just gave it everything and I didn't look back."

The Brownlee brothers were working hard together, stalking Gomez at the start of the concluding run. And with their superior sprint finishes, they were expected to overhaul the Spaniard.

And despite admitting disappointment for his brother, Jonny Brownlee - still only 20 - was delighted with the best result of his career.

"It is a dream come true to finish on the podium," he said.

"It was a bit of a shock to find myself on the front. Javier pushed on and I had nothing left. I don't know what happened with Alistair as he just seemed to stop, he's a great champion and he will bounce back from this."

Frodeno continues to provisionally lead the World Championship Series overall standings heading into the final race before the Grand Final in Kitzbuehel.
