Larcher De Brito makes no apologies for squeals

PORTUGUESE teenager Michelle Larcher De Brito may have bowed out of the French Open, but she has certainly made an impression at Roland Garros.

The 16-year-old's propensity to shriek, moan and grunt in a way that suggests she's having her fingernails ripped out one-by-one every time she plays a point has caused quite a stir in Paris.

Five minutes courtside when Larcher De Brito's vocal chords are in full swing would put a compilation of Monica Seles' finest ear-splitting exploits in the Easy Listening category.

The world number 132, quite literally, announced herself at the 2009 French Open by bouncing back from a 0-6 deficit to overcome Great Britain's Melanie South in three sets before defeating China's 15th seed Jie Zheng 6-4, 6-3.

In round three France's Aravane Rezai proved a step too far for the young yodeller but she was definitely rattled.

"It's very disturbing, it's disturbing me," pleaded an angry Rezai. "Please there is a limit, enough."

But Larcher De Brito insists she cannot help it. The tenacious teenager revealed she suffers from a rare illness, also seen in former world number one Maria Sharapova, known as tennis tourettes.

"I can do nothing about it," said Larcher De Brito - who was reared at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida from the age of nine.

"It's just something I've done always since I started playing tennis. I'm going to keep on doing it, because it's really part of my game.

"I don't mind if people think it's bad or not. I just keep on doing it."

Having reached the third round of her debut Grand Slam tournament, Larcher De Brito clear has the talent to back up the hype.

She is sure to make an impact at Wimbledon in June. Whether the squeaky clean All England Club members take a shine to her is another matter, but in her eyes at least, she is definitely something worth shouting about.

Meanwhile, as Larcher De Brito vows to keep the volume up, Romania's Simona Halep is seeking medical help to reduce her most prized assets.

The 17-year-old is to undergo surgery to lessen the load of her 34DD breasts, claiming they are a disadvantage as she languishes outside the top 300 in the world.

The news has not gone down well with British fans hoping to catch a glimpse of Halep at Wimbledon though and an online petition - Save Simona Halep Boobs - has been created.

But it seems her mind is made up.

"The breasts make me uncomfortable when I play - it's the weight that bothers my ability to react to quickly," revealed Halep - who won the girl's singles title in Roland Garros last year.

Perhaps a mixed doubles stint would soon see her surge through the rankings and think twice.
