Renwick to add backstroke to his repertoire for Commonwealths

ROBBIE Renwick has revealed he will be looking to add the backstroke to his list of Commonwealth swims at the Scottish National Championships later this month.

Renwick will travel to the Commonwealth trials in Glasgow as a shoe-in to qualify for the 400m and 200m freestyles, having already claimed British gold and silver respectively in March.

The 21-year-old's main rival in both will come in the form of double Commonwealth champion David Carry - who he twice got the better of at the British Championships.

And with that in mind Renwick admitted he will be aiming to secure a further swim at the Delhi showpiece in October in the 50m backstroke.

"The focus for me is the freestyle of course, but I am also looking at the 50m backstroke," said Renwick - who took part in Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week on Thursday in Oban - a sportscotland initiative that will involve over 700 schools across Scotland.

"It is on the first day of the meeting. It will be good to do well in that and set myself up for the rest of the week.

"It is good to mix things up a bit and I am just trying to go there as relaxed as possible and with a lot of confidence off the back of how I have been swimming recently.

"I have just come back from Monaco and I did some good times and I am pleased with how my swimming is going at the moment.

"The focus for me now is the Scottish Nationals and hopefully I can swim some fast times and qualify for the Commonwealth Games."
