Tennis youngsters lead the way at World Student Games
GREAT Britain enjoyed a mixed day at the World University Games on Friday, and while Andy Murray's hopes were dashed back in the UK, it was the tennis youngsters leading the way in Belgrade.
Max Jones and Sam Murray both advanced through their respective first round matches. Jones, based in New Mexico, overcame Hungary's Kuharszky Andreas 6-4, 6-1.
And Murray wasted little time on cruising past Ana De La Pena of Mexico 6-1, 6-0 in the women's draw.
In the gymnastics hall, the men's team event got underway with Thomas Rawlinson, Robert Payne, Tim Sanders, Steven Jehu and Ahmahd Thomas flying the flag for Great Britain.
Jehu and Payne both qualified for the all-round final, joining former world champion Beth Tweddle, who reached the finals of the uneven bars and the floor exercise on Thursday.
But there was not such good news for the British taekwondo athletes as both Craig Eden and Carla Summerhill lost out in their opening bouts.
Eden came unstuck against Loniewski Michal Stefan from Poland 3-2, while Summerhill was no match for Olympic bronze medallist Zubcic Martina.
And in the fencing competition, Martina Emanuel, Claire Bennett, Thomas Bennett, Jamie Melia and Lukas Kuhlmey were all knocked out of their respective individual competitions.
Elsewhere, the women's volleyball team lost out in three sets to hosts Serbia.
